The events we play for can be called Ceilidhs or Barn Dances. What's the difference? Er .. see the FAQ. The most noticeable difference, in our case, is that we are electric and have drums. Yup, we are just a bit louder than a pair of fiddles. :-) Our ceilidhs feature us playing the music and guiding the dancers, or "calling". The caller's instructions (or "suggestions" depending on how late it is and how well the bar has done that night :-) ) will be familiar to most people; "Dozey-doh"; "Right-hand star"; "Circle right"; "Mine's a pint" etc The dances are collected from many sources and from across the ages. You may find yourself dancing The Horse's Brawl (from 1588), Strip the Willow or a dance written this year. The music is just as eclectic and will feature a mix of traditional and non-traditional tunes played in traditional and non-traditional ways. We draw from all sorts of sources from the Celtic tune mother load to Folk 'n' Roll, Trenchtown to Detroit, Dublin to New Orleans. As far as we are concerned there are no rules so don't be surprised if T-Rex, Bo Diddly or Prokofiev get a musical mention at some time in the evening. If you have particular favourite dances, tunes or songs let us know,
we probably know them, and if you (or your nominated representative) want
to play or sing with us, that's welcomed too. Get up and shake a
maraca, no one's looking :) |
